スペースシャトルはフロリダのケネディ宇宙センターに置かれていたのですが、4月17日にジャンボジェット機で、スミソニアン博物館があるワシントンD.C.に運ばれました。

ジャンボジェット機の上にスペースシャトルが乗っていて、「親亀の上に子亀」状態です。

Imagine flying from Florida to D.C. with nowhere to sit, no air conditioning, no place to store your bags -- not even a bathroom. Imagine flying anywhere under those conditions.
座席等は取り外されているようですね。「bathroom」というのはこの場合「浴室」ではなく「お手洗い」という意味になります。
もちろんこれは機体を軽くするためですが、それでも機体の重量は250,000ボンド（約110トン）だそうです。スペースシャトルの重量が176,000ポンド（約80トン）だそうなので、燃料も2倍必要になるようです。（上記URLから抜粋）
The planes' passenger areas were stripped of creature comforts, such as galleys, carpeting and even part of the inside temperature duct work -- all for the sake of reducing weight. But the weight still is more than 250,000 pounds, and the drag created by the shape and weight of the orbiter -- 176,000 pounds or more, depending on the payload -- negates the small amount of lift it adds. During a normal flight, the SCA might use 20,000 pounds of fuel an hour; with an orbiter on its back, that number doubles.
「creature confort」は「居住性」、「galley」は「（航空機内の）厨房」です。「payload」は「荷重」ですが、荷物そのものを指すことも有ります。
「for the sake of」は「〜のために」という意味ですが、目的、利益の意味で使われ、何かの理由の意味で使われる「because of」とは区別されます。
ディスカバリー号は、今後はスミソニアン博物館に展示されますが、ここには元々エンタープライズ号が展示されていました。（エンタープライズ号は地上への着陸試験のために造られた機体で宇宙には行っていません。）この2機が対面しているのがNASAのWebページにあります。。
